This country's economy, social structure, and national security are threatened when its workforce
doesn't have the skills needed to be globally competitive, its parents don't have the skills to read
to their children, and their citizens can't understand newspaper stories about presidential
candidates and political platforms.
If this country cannot afford to have our young people drop out of high school because of what
it will cost us in the future, it cannot afford to have 30 million adults without the reading, writing,
math, and English skills they need to be successful parents, employees, or citizens because of what
it cost us now in lost wages, taxes, and productivity. No child should be left behind. But no adult
should either.
